If there is one thing I love, it’s talking to people. So I’m really excited to introduce myself to all of you! My name is Jenna Lowrance and I’ve just started my internship with Night and Daye Events.
I was raised in Purcellville, Virginia, but I am currently a Sophomore at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. I’m majoring in English and double minoring in communications and leadership studies. With this experience, I’m hoping to grow up to be in Human Resources, Public Relations, Marketing/Advertising, Event Planning, or Publishing. I’m involved with a few organizations on CNU’s campus, including Alpha Delta Pi, Colleges Against Caner (CAC; which puts on Relay for Life at CNU) and Her Campus. Those are just a couple of the things I’m passionate about.
I began my social media/marketing internship with Night and Daye Events in August 2016. I applied to a few internships in the Hampton Roads area, close to school, but I was most excited about the opportunity with Sarah-Daye Hand. She was quick to respond and I began working on my first project.
Going into it there were a few things I knew I wanted to learn:
How to act professionally with clients
"Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." - Jim Rohn
I’ve worked in a restaurant and retail before so I’ve obviously had to deal with professional atmospheres before, but each area has its own vibe and unwritten rules to them. I wanted to learn specifically about how to talk to clients in a more personal setting.
About Event Planning
"The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new" - Socrates
I hadn’t really thought about event planning as a possible profession until I talked to Sarah-Daye in the initial interview. I realized Sarah-Daye and I have a lot in common and that event planning was something I could be very passionate about.
About the details of a business
"Great things are done by a series of small things that are brought together" - Vincent Van Gogh
As a child, I played house and doctor, like any other child, but my childhood pretending activities also included creating spreadsheets and forms, for my nonexistent babysitting service or my lemonade stand for the week. This may sound quirky, but I really did this, just ask my mom. From an early age, it’s obvious how I became interested in creating professional presentations, documents, advertisements and any other outcomes of a business. I’m excited to learn business/professional writing in a real-world setting. I’m excited to begin our projects and help rebrand Night and Daye products.
See the iceberg behind the business
"It takes 20 years to become an overnight success." - Eddie Cantor
If you’ve ever seen a picture of an iceberg what you see above the surface of the water is minuscule compared to the mountain beneath the surface, which is similar to an entrepreneur’s standpoint. You never really stop to think about how one becomes an entrepreneur and what people have to do to have the business that they develop. Processes, to me, are interesting. The hard work, dedication and effort of being your own boss intrigues me.\
How to execute a wedding
"The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing" - Walt Disney
When I did yearbook, the best part of the process was when we received the book. Not because the work was finished, but because you saw all of your hard work in the yearbook. I think the same must be true of anything that requires such extensive planning. I look forward to seeing the hard work of my internship pay off and the end result.
Overall, I’m excited for what this year will bring me via my internship and I’m excited to learn.
