Today, Matthew and I have been dating for two years!! So, I thought I'd share our love story with you all!
It all began when I was complaining to my mother that I wasn't meeting anyone in Williamsburg, especially any bachelors! Her solution was to join a gym, so I did just that. I signed up with American Family Fitness. Well, I didn't really know anything about how to work out, so I decided to just take advantage of the free classes "AmFam" offered. Zumba, of course, was one of the classes that interested me most. After a few weeks I met Amanda, whom I shared in the misery of not being able to find dates in Williamsburg. Not long after our conversation began, she made sure I knew she has a single brother; a brother she actually went home and told she had found him a girlfriend.
Amanda and I became fast friends. I still hadn't met this mysterious single brother, as he was in Abu Dhabi for work, but I was so happy to finally have a girlfriend to hang out with. We spent the early part of the summer at the beach, going to parties, planning her mother's wedding, all the while joking that I would be dating her brother as soon as he was back.
Then the day finally came that I met Matthew, my supposed future boyfriend. To me it was a normal day, I was going to Amanda and Matthew's apartment to pick her up for the gym. I knocked on the door expecting Amanda to answer, but it was Matthew who opened the door this day. I hadn't seen a photo of him before, but HE WAS SO CUTE! I walked right in before realizing that I should probably make sure I was, in fact, at Amanda's apartment and didn't just walk into some random cute stranger's apartment. I turned back around to talk to him, and you guys, I was so nervous! I didn't really believe I would actually want to date Amanda's brother! I thought it was just a joke, a love story we pulled from all the chick flicks we watched.
The three of us hung out for the rest of the summer. The more time I spent with Matthew, the more he proved to be the kind of guy I wanted to date. He was exactly the kind of guy I had been waiting for, marriage material, for sure.
The whole time, Amanda was plotting ways to get Matthew and I together more. She'd get us all together for dinner, she even bailed on me for a party once! My friend was turning 30 so it was a Gatsby style party, and we were dressing up. We had gone to the beach that day, so we were burnt and she wanted to take a nap. She insisted that I make Matthew go with me. Now, Matthew is not one to dress up...at all, but this guy stopped playing his video games and put on dress pants to come to this birthday party with me. That was when I realized I really did, in fact, have a crush on Amanda's brother.
From that point on, it was ME trying to plot how to get us together. We had started flirting but neither of us knew how, or if we even should, cross that line. I knew the clock was ticking as he was going back to Abu Dhabi soon and I had to act! One night, Amanda was out of town, but encouraged me to call Matthew and see what he was doing. With that, Matthew and I went on our first date! We had a great time walking around Colonial Williamsburg and eating at Barretts.
Matthew filled Amanda in a few days later and she was even more excited about bringing me to Florida to meet their mother, which was only days away. Matt and I still hadn't had "the talk" yet but upon arriving in Florida for the wedding, everyone introduced me as "Matt's Girlfriend", so we just went with it.
Matthew went back to Abu Dhabi a week later for FOUR MONTHS. Luckily with today's technology, we were able to text every day and we Skyped every weekend. Those four months flew by and I knew I had fallen in love with him. If we're being honest, I knew I loved him the moment he put on a fedora and took me to a 20's party. I planned on picking him up from Dulles Airport and spending the weekend in DC together so we could have the opportunity to share our feelings. I was pretty certain he felt the same way I did. We went to dinner at an amazing Sushi restaurant and he told me all about Abu Dhabi and his flight back. After dinner, while walking me back to the car, he pulled me in for a hug and kissed my forehead and told me he loved me! I practically screamed it back I was so excited and happy.
Its been two years since the Florida wedding and officially being introduced as Matthew's girlfriend. Its been two years of struggling through months of long distance relationship status. Its been two years of laughs, gaming, tears, getting puppies and discovering life together. Its been two years of being undeniably in love with Matthew and I cant wait until I can begin planning my own wedding!!
Happy anniversary Matthew!
